bEST KID-FRIENDLY BEACHES ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND
Hilton Head Island is known far and wide for being the Lowcountry’s most popular vacation destination. With over 12 miles of beautiful beaches, it’s the perfect place to spend a week enjoying the sun and sand with the whole family. Hilton Head's beaches often have tidepools, which offer a fun-size alternative to swimming in the ocean because they’re deep enough for splashing and playing without the waves! Tidepools are one of many things we love about the beaches on Hilton Head.
Whether you’re a local or return visitor, you probably have a specific beach spot where you like to set up camp with your little ones. However, you might not know that some beaches on Hilton Head are far better suited for children than others. Here’s a look at some of the best kid-friendly beaches on HHI:
1) COLIGNY BEACH
After lugging a beach wagon down to the sand packed with chairs, a tent, toys, towels, and more, the general goal is to stay put for a few hours, enjoy the beach with your kids, and avoid talk of too-hot sand or going back to the pool. Coligny Beach Park provides a fun atmosphere both on and off the beach so your little ones will want to stay all day!
Access to facilities ranks high on our list of things to consider for a beach day with the kids, and Coligny delivers. Restrooms and changing areas are located just off the beach’s paved walkway, along with a fun splash pad area and shaded bench swings for when you need a little break from the sun, sand, and saltwater. Beach parking is located across the street, so a wagon is a must! We recommend our Veer Cruiser or Evenflo Pivot Xplore Stroller Wagon.
2) bURKE’S BEACH
Though there are many factors to consider when choosing where to spend some family beach time, atmosphere and crowd levels are two of the most important. Burke’s Beach is located towards the middle of the island, so you’ll generally find less people there than you would at some of the other well known south end beaches.
The beach is located by Chaplin Park, which offers ample parking, direct access to the beach via paved walkways, restrooms, and a picnic area. Beach break bonuses include a playground, basketball and tennis courts, soccer fields, and more. Don’t skip on this kid-friendly oasis!
3) TOWER BEACH
We couldn’t leave this one off our list! Tower Beach in Sea Pines is one of our favorite kid-friendly Hilton Head beaches. It’s important to note, however, that this beach is private to Sea Pines property owners and their guests. Definitely make a point to enjoy this beach if you’re visiting family or friends who live in Sea Pines!
Tower Beach is an adventure in itself, and your kids will love every minute of it. After parking in the private lot, take the winding walkway down to the beach and enjoy views of dunes, seagrass, and neighboring islands from afar. Take a break at the covered gathering area which includes tables, restrooms, and grills for a post-beach day cookout!
Whichever beach you choose, be sure to pack all of the essentials for a cool and comfortable day of fun in the sun for your little one like our beach tents or portable fans.
